A Pakistani CNIC number looks like 42101-1234567-1. It is not a random serial. Three separate pieces of information are packed into those thirteen digits, and only one of them is genuinely opaque.
The 5-7-1 pattern
Every Computerised National Identity Card number is thirteen digits, conventionally printed with two dashes:
- Digits 1–5 — the regional prefix. Where the card was registered: province, division, district, and a local zone.
- Digits 6–12 — the family and serial block. Seven digits identifying the family record and the individual within it.
- Digit 13 — gender and check digit. Odd for male, even for female, and mathematically tied to the rest of the number.
The dashes carry no meaning. Some systems store the number with them, some without; both refer to the same thirteen digits.
Digits 1–5: the regional prefix
This is the part that can actually be read, and it is the subject of this whole site. It breaks down further:

The first digit is the reliable one. It runs 1 to 7 and never means anything else:
- 1 — Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
- 2 — FATA (legacy; merged into K-PK in 2018)
- 3 — Punjab
- 4 — Sindh
- 5 — Balochistan
- 6 — Islamabad Capital Territory
- 7 — Gilgit-Baltistan

Digits four and five are a local registration zone, roughly at union-council level. NADRA has never published this table, so only a limited set of these can be named with confidence.
Digits 6–12: the family and serial block
These seven digits identify a family record and the individual inside it. Family members registered together often share part of this block — which is why relatives’ CNIC numbers sometimes look similar in the middle — but NADRA has never documented the internal structure.
Digit 13: gender and the check digit
The last digit does two jobs at once. Its parity encodes gender — odd for male, even for female — which is why a CNIC ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 belongs to a man and one ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 to a woman.
It is also a check digit, calculated from the preceding twelve. That is what lets a bank form or a SIM registration portal reject a mistyped CNIC instantly, without asking NADRA anything. If you transpose two digits, the check almost always fails.
What the number does not contain
It is worth being blunt about the limits, because a lot of misinformation circulates on this point. A CNIC number does not encode:
- Your date of birth
- Your current address
- Your caste, religion or ethnicity
- Your domicile status
- Whether the card is currently valid
The only geography in the number is the registration district, and even that is historical. Someone born and registered in Dadu who has lived in Karachi for thirty years still carries a 412 prefix.
Reading a number yourself
Take the first five digits and look them up. The lookup tool on the front page resolves any prefix to a province, division, district and — where documented — a named local zone. You can paste an entire CNIC into it; it reads the first five digits and ignores the rest.
